Real Madrid remain unbeaten and drew against a much more prepared Olympique Lyonnais that had a two goal lead on the night. Grenier put the home team in front with a nice volley on 20 minutes, while Lisandro put even more distance between the two teams in the second half. The Whites, true to their tradition, did not give up and turned the match around in the last fifteen minutes. Morata converted a penalty given for a clear foul on Cheryshev in the 78th minute and Casemiro, who has scored in both preseason matches, did so with a header from a corner to earn a deserved draw against a team that have been in training for around a month that and are six days away from playing their first official match.

Real Madrid made their return to the Stade de Gerland almost two years after last being there and played their second match of the preseason against Olympique Lyonnais, whose preparation is at a more advanced stage. The first 25 minutes showed that. The French team, supported by their home crowd, went out on to the field looking physically superior and in the 20th minute they took the lead on the scoreboard. It came following a Lacazette cross from the right and Grenier, with one touch and without letting the ball drop, beat Diego Lopez, who had prevented a goal in the opening play of the match with a great full-stretch save against the very same French midfielder.

Around half of the first half had elapsed, and when Olympique Lyonnais’ big push began to wane, the Whites’ quality shone through and Real Madrid took control of the match. The dangerous moves began to rack up, of which Di Maria had the two clearest. The Argentine’s volley in the first was stopped by Lopes in the 24th minute, while his low shot following a nice team move was also saved by the French team’s goalkeeper in the 37th minute. The Whites almost managed to draw level, but they went in at the break with the scoreboard still against them.

The start of the second half was very different from the first. Real Madrid came out determined to take control and level the match. It nearly came in the 59th minute with Di Maria once again at the centre of things. The move started with Cristiano Ronaldo, who managed to cross the ball when under pressure from three opponents on the wing, and then Khedira played the ball on with his chest before the Argentine shot with his right, but the goalkeeper, Lopes, saved once again. Lyon’s second did come three minutes later though. Lisandro took advantage of a rebound in the area to beat Adan.

The match had become tougher, but there was still half an hour left to try to turn around the scoreboard. And Real Madrid, true to their tradition, did not cease in their efforts and kept going until the end. Morata’s back-heel was not enough to beat the home team’s goalkeeper in the 72nd minute and three minutes later Modric hit the crossbar. The move started with Di Maria and the argentine international’s cross was met by the Croatian’s header. The visitors’ goal seemed much closer and it came from penalty following a clear foul committed by Gonalons on Cheryshev. Morata beat the French team’s goalkeeper from the spot in the 78th minute. There were more than ten minutes remaining for the Whites to at least equalise. That is was they did. Casemiro, with a header from a corner, levelled the scoreline and sealed the deserved draw against a team that have been in training for almost a month. The Whites remain unbeaten.
