Chelsea could take advantage of Real Madid’s pursuit of Gareth Bale with a £20million offer for Germany midfielder Sami Khedira.

Madrid’s pursuit of Bale for a world-record fee of £85million has left the Spanish champions keen to raise funds and slim down the squad left behind by Jose Mourinho.

Mourinho is determined to strengthen the spine of his Chelsea midfield with Frank Lampard nearing the end of his career, Michael Essien slowed by injuries and John Obi Mikel set to move on.

Khedira would fit the bill. The 26-year-old joined Madrid from Stuttgart in 2010 and retains good relations with Mourinho from the Blues boss’ time in the Spanish capital.

The holding midfielder has 39 caps for Germany but may feel a move, with the prospect of more first-team football in west London, who help him cement his place in the Germany squad in World Cup year.
