Reports in Spain say Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti is increasingly confident of landing the Welshman, despite hinting earlier this month that he was not interested in signing him.

Spurs are believed to have had talks with the La Liga giants this week over a transfer, but despite figures of around £85million being discussed, nothing was agreed.

It’s now thought that Madrid are ready to throw Portuguese wing-back Coentrao into a package deal, in a bid to try and force Tottenham into selling.

Madrid value the 26-year-old at around £10million, and believe the fact that Spurs are already interested in him may work in their favour.

Andre Villas-Boas was coy on whether Bale would be staying when quizzed this week, insisting that he didn’t want to answer questions on the winger’s future.

‘He is a player that we are willing to continue to have, he’s a Tottenham player, he’s one of the most fantastic players in the world at the moment,’ said Villas-Boas.

‘I can’t make any more comments. I don’t want to repeat myself in all press conferences.’

Madrid would have to offer at least £60million as well as Coentrao to land Bale, but are cash rich after selling Gonzalo Higuain, Raul Albiol and Jose Callejon to Napoli for a combined £46million.
