Higuaín's effort on Sunday night took him to 104 competitive goals for Real Madrid, the same amount 'Ronie' scored in the famous white shirt. 'Pipita' has taken 221 matches to reach this total, while the Brazilian did it in 177.
The Argentine's first goal for Madrid came at the Calderón in 2007, but it was his maiden effort at the Bernabéu that etched his name in the fans' memories. Those were the days of dramatic comebacks in the league under Fabio Capello, and this was perhaps the most spectacular. Real Madrid was losing 3-1 at home to Espanyol and could see the championship slipping away. Higuaín had other ideas and in the 88th minute he slid the ball into the net to cap off a turnaround that went a long way towards deciding the destination of the league trophy.
Other memorable Higuaín goals include the one that clinched the league in Pamplona in 2008, the last-gasp winner against Getafe in another famous comeback (3-2) and his effort against Valdés at the Bernabéu the day Barça was forced to give Madrid a guard of honour. These goals bear witness to a commitment and fighting spirit that have helped him become the club's fifteenth highest goalscorer of all time, sealing his place in Real Madrid history in the process.
