Just two weeks after winning his second European Championship, Casillas hosted a private a clinic yesterday with over 100 children in the BBVA Compass Stadium in Houston. The Real Madrid and Spain captain took the chance to talk about his nomination for the Balon d'Or and was adamant that being a goalkeeper was a clear disadvantage: "The Balon d'Or has to be won by the player that most deserves it. People are saying now that I'm in with a shout, but it's not something I'm obsessed about. Goalkeepers rarely stand a chance in these awards, but I still feel that we should have the same right to win a Balon d'Or as any other player that runs out onto the pitch. If Yashin won it, why not another goalkeeper?"
Casillas also responded to claims that Spain is the best national team in the history of the game: "I don't know if it's the greatest, but I don't think there's any doubt that this Spain team is up there with the best of them. We've gone from suffering with the national team to creating something we can be proud of and we're now favourites in every competition. Everyone wants to win against us; we've become the team to beat".
The Real Madrid and 'La Roja' captain referred to the clashes in the storm of clásicos that put the unity of the national team in jeopardy: "There were more discrepancies than confrontations, but we've all worked towards making sure everything was resolved, and that is what made us champions again".
Aims.
In terms of next season's goals, both with Madrid and Spain, the captain was optimistic: "We need to get off to a good start in the league when we take on Valencia, a strong team that always makes life difficult. The aim is to keep on winning titles, we want to win all four we are competing for at Real Madrid: the Spanish Super Cup, La Liga, the Copa de Rey and the Champions League. Clearly out of the four there is one in particular that is special to Madrid fans and that's the Tenth Champions League. Last season we fell at the final hurdle, but this campaign we want to reach the final, and, of course, win. I'd also love to lift the Confederations Cup with Spain". Casillas' ambition knows no bounds...
